The Idea
On long train rides to and from work, reading fashion books is my favorite pass time. As I read a chapter dedicated to the ongoing rivalry for the Americana aesthetic between Tommy Hilfiger and Ralph Lauren, an idea sparked for a project.
This publication tells the story of each brand, intending to highlight the designers’ thought processes behind iconic brand decisions. It is true how Tommy Hilfiger and Ralph Lauren share a similar aesthetic, however their brand motivations are vastly different.
The Build
Research of both brands led to the system that worked best for the story telling of this publication; The Americana aesthetic is used with deliberate care to represent Hilfiger’s bold and youthful timelessness, along with Lauren’s refined and nostalgic version of the American dream.
A deep red introduces Tommy Hilfiger and Ralph Lauren, setting the tone for a rich era of fashion. As you turn the pages, note how the colors evolve; Ralph Lauren’s dark green brightens with time, reflecting cultural growth, while Hilfiger’s deep blues shift with each chapter. Americana is more than fashion; it is a living movement, a story told through color, style, and legacy.

The Drawing Board
A minor in fashion has influenced a love for fashion sketching and fabric knowledge within me. The process for this publication included a flat version, along with an exploration of a version with tangible fashion elements. After sketching and collecting fabrics to go with the theme of each chapter, the publication came together.
